INTERVIEW: Bigg Redd

by Cyrus Rhodes

From start to finish “Do You Qualify” is a real barnburner and is better than the homemade your mama used to make Jambalaya. The music is consistent, uplifting, extremely entertaining and personifies all the best in good Americana Soul. Note for note, song for song there isn’t really a weak piece on this entire catalog. The writing an playing abilities of Bigg Redd and his band is rock solid. The lyrics are catchy, and the melodies are well crafted. Last but not least the songwriting and vocal presence from the "bigg man" are world-class. He’s in a class by himself. All in all - “Do You Qualify” is one of the best CD’s to slide across my desk this year.

IMD What do you want fans to take from your music?

BR I want them to walk away feeling a personal connection with  me.

IMD Who are some of your top  musical influences?

BR Bob Marley, Marvin  Gaye, Johnny  Taylor, Bob Dylan, Aaron  Neville, Buckwheat Zydeco1James Taylor, B B King, Marvin Sease, Willie Nelson  and George  Strait. Just to name  a few.

IMD What was the best concert you have ever been to?

BR I've been to some really good concerts all of them with different emotions. So, that is a question is difficult one to answer. But, I guess Iwill say The Marley  Brothers at the House of Blues in Houston, Texas or, or the Jubilee  Fest with  Aaron  Neville  and the  Neville Brothers in Montgomery, Alabama  at which I also performed as Big Red & the  Zydeco  Playmakers.

IMD Tell us a bit about your latest CD?

BR With the exception of the cover tunes all songs were written from real life experiences.

IMD What's the best and worst things about being an Artist based in your new area?

BR The best is knowing that people relate and accept me for who Iam. The worst thing is simply not being heard.

IMD How did this latest CO/project get conceptualized?

BR I was just  being  true  to myself and  recording what  felt  good  to me. That resulted in several different genres coming to the surface.

IMD What's the best thing about performing live?

BR is a natural high that could never be matched with any drug.

IMD Is there a song on your latest CD that stands out  as being  your  personal favorite? Why?

BR Chiquitita Bonita because it has allowed me bridge different cultures together.

IMD Any touring scheduled to support? If so how long is the tour?

BR I am working with a couple personalities who have some experience in charting tours. We are adding dates as they come to us. Iwould like to tour through out of the year with a few breaks here and there.
