INTERVIEW: Frank Palangi
by Cyrus Rhodes
I Am Ready EP from Frank Palangi is an impressive and extremely consistent musical statement from start to finish. Its strength Ė the strong song for song consistency, progressive spectrum of sound and strong melodic structure that keep you guessing. The music goes down clean and is more like a high end sports car than a 1970 Muscle Car. I look forward to hearing the full length release, hopefully this Summer
IMD How would classify your music?
FP Positive Driving Rock
IMD Who are some of your top 5 musical influences?
FP Metallica, Daughtry, Johnny Cash, Creed, Three Days Grace
IMD How did this EP release of music come together?
FP After my first EP release, I wanted to work with a different producer on a new single first. I met Rob Coates from TN and we began making I AM READY and after releasing soon realized the feedback and people asking if another EP was coming out. Within that fall we began ďFROZENĒ then in spring for 3 to 4 months the rest of the tracks getting everything done about 4 weeks before release. Thatís a pretty tight schedule ahah.
IMD What inspired you to start writing and composing music in the first place?
FP Ever since my early teens I start writing my own riffs and random lyrics. Eventually I formed them into songs and started doing my own demo recordings in my bedroom, and basement. I love to create and the idea of making whatever came to oneís mind and then developing that, was interesting to me.
IMD Howís the music scene in your locale?
"I love to create and the idea of making whatever came to oneís mind and then developing that, was interesting to me."
- Frank Palangi-
FP A lot of cover bands, folk artists, and acoustic players in my area. Getting about 45 min south of me start the original bands of rock, country and metal. I live in the Adirondacks so folk, acoustic music is really in here. I think the original scene in developing a little, but cover songs are king here.
IMD What is the best concert you have been to? What do you like most about playing live?
FP I think it was the show I just played with 3 Doors Down. Everything went smooth. The audienceís feedback and attention was there. Iíve never seen 3 Doors either so it was my first time watching and the songs from the basement tour idea is amazing! They were so good! They could be themselves without the rock show hype. The sound at the Egg in Albany, NY was great! It was a sold out show and I couldnít of asked for more.
IMD Is there a song on your latest release that stands out as your personal favorite and why?
FP To me, itís always been I AM READY. Thatís the song I wrote that still stands true. Itís about following your passion and dreams in life. At the time I wrote, I wanted to say what I felt, and I felt ready to take the next step. I think itís going to be that tune that sticks with me and my fans for a long time.
IMD How have you evolved as an artist or band over the last few years?
FP I believe my lyric writing has expanded as I understand myself more and expand on certain life subjects. My stage performance has become more energetic and interaction with audiences are better. Because I play more acoustic now than electric, my style isnít the typical acoustic playing. I play electric on acoustic basically. Lol but Iíve expanding with bass playing, drums as well. The sound production end for sure has evolved and I will continue to test my boundaries with what I can do on a small budget but still delivering a mainstream sound with the resources I have.
IMD Any touring scheduled to support this latest effort?
FP I play heavily in the Upstate NY area which is where Iím from. I go out to PA, MA, VT, CT as well when I can. Touring is expensive and being independent isnít easy. Iím always looking to open for national acts and aiming to do a prolonged tour with one of them as their official supporting act. In general I stay busy from April-Sept. playing out 2/3 shows a week with doing radio/written interviews, recording, writing and working on side projects. This year though since Jan has been crankin so I think this year will be the most Iíve played out and most exposure yet.
IMD Whatís next for rank Palangi?
FP April 1st I have a brand-new side single coming out called ďHOPEĒ. Audiences had been loving the acoustic live version when I play so I hope they like the full version too. I decided to give a crack at producing this track. Michael McManus (12stones, Saving Abel) drummer has played on it as well. As for a full length album, I made my mind up and wonít do one until Iím on a label because when pitching to labels, shows and etc. they donít listen nor have time to look at a full record. So Iím an single and EP man for now haha. Iím been noticing singles and EPís are what a lot of artists are doing too recently.
