INTERVIEW: Will McBride Group
By Cyrus Rhodes
Overall 3 PLAY by Will McBride Group is an extremely entertaining catalogue of music. I only wish there were more songs. It’s strong suit – the amazing amount of originality, creativity and musical diversity this EP has to offer. The production value is thick as a brick and like the aforementioned I especially enjoyed the amazing musicianship and amazing flow and ebb quality to the catalogue. My hats off to Custer and the rest of the Production Team, but also to McBride for taking all this on himself and pulling it off very well. All in all Will McBride sis amazing with his unique signature sound and multitalented musical virtuoso. I look forward to hearing the full length hopefully later this year.
IMD Who are some of your top 5 musical influences?
WM As a guitarist, some of the great guitarists of all time, of course. Mark Knopfler, Carlos Santana, Wes Montgomery come to mind. As a songwriter, clever and creative pop/rock composers inspire me…Steely Dan, Elvis Costello, John Mayer are just a few.
IMD What’s the main thing you want fans to take from your music?
WM I hope that fans get the whole package of what we are creating…intelligence of the lyrics, intricacy of the construction of the song and how it comes together to create an infectious hook. But if they just dig it for no reason at all…that’s cool too!!
IMD What’s the best concert you’ve ever been to? Probably the first US tour of Dire Straits…wow, I guess I just dated myself!
WM Is there a song that stands out on this release as being your favorite on your latest album? Hmmm…tough call, I think each tune brings something different to the recording that I really like, so I can’t pick just one.
IMD I really enjoyed the track "Mental Health Day” I must say I felt this song speak to me personally can you tell us what inspired that piece of music?
WM Beyond the obvious…not really. I guess wanted to express that you can really need a break, without hating what you do, what you have, or who you are. Reflecting on what is really important in life is necessary…sometimes you just need to extract yourself from the day-to-day.

IMD How does this release differ from your others, and when shall we expect the full length?
WM The target of 3PLAY was primarily to do something with a producer to get an outside influence on creating something that is bigger than just the three of us. In 2009 we released a self-produced, full-length recording “Trifecta” whose target was to recreate what we do live…no overdubs or layering. I’m very proud of how it turned out…there are some “less than perfect” parts that make it interesting. 3PLAY was a totally different endeavor.
IMD How’s the Music Business in your neck of the woods?
WM Actually quite good. Lots of little places to play, lots of opportunities for bands to play, especially if they are willing to do it for little or no pay. We don’t do that much anymore, but it is important for a band that is just starting. The bigger venues are great, several outdoor amphitheaters. Those are fun!!
IMD Any touring scheduled in support?
WM Only regionally. All the band members have day gigs that WAY out pay what we could make touring. Plus we have mortgages and families so it is not financially feasible to tour yet. Sounds fun, though!
IMD What do you like the most about playing live?
WM The response! People don’t realize how much their reaction affects the performance of the band. It is HUGE!
IMD What’s next for Will McBride Groupo?
WM Our previous bassist retired from live performance, so we are working in our new bassist, playing local gigs now and tightening the show. We do a lot of outdoor events regionally during spring and summer, so we’ll be doing that, and working up new original material. Hopefully recording again before 2012 is over.
